Insurance Coverage and Cost of Testing

CareDx tests are covered by Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans when coverage criteria are met. Coverage varies for commercial and Medicaid plans. CareDx also maintains a Financial Assistance Program for patients who qualify. 95% of CareDx patients have no out-of-pocket expenses.

CareDx Billing Process

1

Your doctor orders a CareDx test.

2

Once testing is complete, CareDx bills your insurance, and we confirm insurance coverage.

3

Your insurance will process a claim for your test. The notice you receive from your insurance is called an Explanation of Benefits, or EOB. This is a statement that explains what was submitted to them and what they covered.

This is not a bill, and you don’t have to make payment.

4

If your insurance denies the claim, they will notify you and CareDx. We will reach out for your permission to help appeal with your insurance provider on your behalf.

Appeals may take several months, and you may be notified of each appeal with another EOB or letter from your insurer. This is standard practice when appealing a claim.

5

In the event the appeals are unsuccessful and you have a financial responsibility, you may contact us to apply for our financial assistance program. If you still have a balance, CareDx will send you an invoice—like the one shown above—for your remaining responsibility. Do not make payment until you receive this invoice.

What’s the difference between an EOB and a bill?

The notice you receive from your insurance is called an Explanation of Benefits, or EOB. This is a statement that explains what was submitted to them and what they covered. This is not a bill, and you don’t have to make payment.

Helpful tips for managing coverage & costs

Support is available

Most transplant centers have financial coordinators who can help you explore ways to pay for your care. You can also speak with your transplant social worker about extra help with medications, travel, or testing costs. In some cases, outside groups may offer patient assistance programs to help transplant patients with medical bills and daily living needs.

What to check during open enrollment

Open enrollment is the time each year when you can choose a new insurance plan or make changes to your current one. Check what tests, medications, and services are covered, compare co-pays and deductibles, and think about what works best for your budget. If you change plans, let your care team know, as new prior authorization (approval of coverage from your insurance company) may be needed.

Commonly asked questions

CareDx tests are covered by Medicare and Medicare Advantage when medical rules for coverage are met. Coverage for commercial insurance and Medicaid plans can vary. We are continually working with insurance partners to help more patients get access to testing.
