Stories and perspectives from transplant patients

What I say about this journey, and I tell people all the time, is: it is a journey. It’s not always easy, but it is manageable and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

On preparing for transplant

Do your homework, get involved early, don’t wait, and just understand to be educated and advocate for yourself, because you really need to do that.

My advice would be to find another person, find a mentor, go to a group, or be around other people that have gone through this, just so you can learn.

On preparing for transplant

Educate yourself, be your own best advocate, because you know best what’s going on in your body. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. Talk to others that are going through what you’re going through.

If I was to give one piece of advice to people that are waiting for a transplant, about to get a transplant: Get ready. Be ready. It’s going to be a new journey. You’re going to get your life back. You’re going to get to be everything that you wanted to be and every moment is precious.

Learn as much as you can. Listen to the professionals, they will guide you. They know best.

Some of the things I learned in my life, especially after I started dialysis and kidney failure, was discipline, compliance, listening to my medical professionals around me. Going into dialysis, I was angry. I didn’t want to do the things they said I had to do. But what I learned was, if I was going to survive my disease, and as my doctor used to say, don’t let my disease dominate me, dominate my disease.
