Returning to everyday activities is an important part of the transplant journey. As your strength and energy improve, you may feel ready to do more and reconnect with the routines, people, and goals that matter to you.
Everyone heals at a different pace, so it’s important to follow your care team’s guidance on when it is safe to resume specific activities. Taking things step by step can help you protect your kidney while building confidence in this next phase of life.
What returning can look like
Building strength and stamina
As recovery progresses, gradual movement can help rebuild strength, stamina, and confidence in your body. Walking, light activity, and low-impact exercise may help you return to hobbies and routines you enjoy.
Choose activities that support your health without putting too much strain on your body, and always check with your care team before starting or changing an exercise routine so it fits your stage of recovery.

Returning to work or school
Going back to work or school can be an important step toward independence and routine. For many people, it also marks a shift from focusing on recovery to rejoining everyday life.
Timing looks different for everyone. It may depend on the type of work or school environment and how recovery is progressing. Some people return sooner, while others need more time, especially if daily demands are more physical.
Before returning to a full schedule, it’s important to get guidance and clearance from your care team.
